Meals in the college

College has a dining hall able to hold meals for over 100 students. Daily meals are informal and relaxed (just don’t talk on a mobile phone during the meal, use this time to hang out and meet new people!). Present your University Card to the staff at each meal, and they will deduct the cost of the meal from your remaining balance. If you have any concern regarding meals in the college, feel free to contact the Kitchen Manager or the CR secretary, who represents the Eddie’s interest to the Catering Committee that deals with meals.

Meal Times

A cooked breakfast is served on Wednesday mornings and at Saturday Brunch. On other mornings, fresh pastries, cereal, and orange juice is served.
In addition, do note that a tea trolley is served by the kitchen in the CR at 11.00 and 15.00 every weekday, and 11.00 on weekends. It has almost become a tradition in St Edmunds for students and fellows to relax and have some stimulating conversations during the tea breaks.

Formal Hall

In St Edmund’s, Formal Hall is held most Friday evenings and some Tuesday evenings in the dining hall. There are two different types of formal dinners: Formal Halls and Guest Nights.
Lounge suits and academic gown must be worn by students of the University. Both start with drinks at 7pm, followed by dinner at 7:30pm. Guest Nights are more formal, with more courses served, and even Port wine and a cheese platter after dessert!
You must sign up on the college website in advance (about 2 weeks!) to attend the formal dinners in St Ed’s, due to the small capacity (110 persons) of our dining hall. The website is For the inaugural dinners, you must sign up by responding to an e-mail that will be sent to your Cambridge account.

College BBQ

The College also has a BBQ behind the Brian Heap building. You can book it via There are grills and a BBQ toolkit available in reception. College members are asked to clean the grills and bring them and the toolkit back to reception after they’re done BBQing.
